Novi Sad - European Capital of Culture 2021

Novi Sad was declared European Capital of Culture for 2021! After the final  presentation of the project "Novi Sad 2021", held this October in Brussels, a  panel of  independent experts made a historic decision to bear the title of the  European Capital of Culture to Novi Sad, the first city outside of the EU to be  assigned.

The concept of the project Novi Sad 2021, consists of four areas jointly called  "4 new bridges": Freedom (creative industries and youth), Hope (devoted to cultural facilities and public spaces), Rainbow (issues of conflicts and migrations) and New Bridge (cultural heritage and hospitality).

By winning this prestigious title of European Capital of  Culture, Novi Sad will build new bridges, literally, but also in terms of standards, methods, principles, and above all the values that we all share with all the inhabitants of Europe.

European Capital of Culture was established in order to highlight the richness and diversity of European culture, strengthen cultural ties among Europeans, connect people from different European countries, meet other cultures, promote mutual understanding and strengthen the sense of Europeanness.

The project Novi Sad 2021 is designed as a platform for the development of cultural and creative potential of Novi Sad, which aims to strengthen the cultural vitality of the city, enabling urban regeneration and improve the international reputation of the tourist offer of Novi Sad. The City of Novi Sad has already become famouse to the international scene thanks to the EXIT Festival and its rich cultural offer.

Novi Sad is the capital of Serbia’s northern Vojvodina province, a multicultural region with 26 ethnic groups and six official languages. In the 18th and 19th century, it was the centre of Serbian culture, politics and social life, which earned it the nickname of ‘Serbian Athens’.

Today Novi Sad is well known as the host of the famous Exit festival, held every July since 2000 in the historic Petrovaradin Citadel on the Danube.
